Pronoun Pete pointing a confused arrow at a person and a dog

Pronoun agreement, case, and reference

Pronoun Pete

“Points at everyone. Means no one in particular.”

What's the problem?

Pronouns refer to people, things or ideas. In formal edited English, choose the appropriate subject or object form and make the intended reference clear. For paired subjects or objects, temporarily remove the other person to check the pronoun: ‘Sam and I arrived’ becomes ‘I arrived’; ‘with Sam and me’ becomes ‘with me.’ Singular ‘they’ is also standard, including when someone’s gender is unknown or when they use they/them pronouns.

Why it works
‘With’ takes the object form ‘me.’ Remove ‘Sam and’ to check: ‘The advisor met with me.’
