Sentence fragments
Fragment Frankie
“Always leaves before finishing the.”
What's the problem?
A complete declarative sentence normally contains a subject and a main verb in an independent clause. Commands can have an understood subject: ‘Stop’ means ‘You stop.’ A fragment is a phrase or dependent clause presented as a sentence. Writers sometimes use fragments deliberately for emphasis, dialogue, or style. These exercises practice complete sentences for formal academic prose.
- ✗ Gremlin-infested
- I switched majors last spring. Because I loved my linguistics elective.
- ✓ Fixed
- I switched majors last spring because I loved my linguistics elective.
- Why it works
- “Because I loved my linguistics elective” depends on another clause. Attaching it to the main clause completes the thought.
